The Collie Rough is a Sheep herding breed from Scotland, that has won its way into mankinds lifestyle through its loving temperament and easy trainability.

A Collie adjusts itself too many situations, the smallest suburban backyard to large properties. Its asks only to be exercised regularly both on and off leash (of course only in safe off lead areas), a weekly brushing, except when malting when you should do it daily (this speeds the malting process) and good food.

Collies are easily trained, as a smart breed they do not do well in repeatative obedience classes and can quickly lose interest in these activities, make sure you choose an obedience club that understands this about the breed.

Collies enjoy good health, and if you do your research before buying one you should only see your Vet for vaccinations and Desexing. It is important in my opinion to see the parents of your dog, and if possible the rest of the Collies on the breeders property, this is the best way to assess the expected temperament of your Collie. Also ask whether the pup has been Eye checked for CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly) this may mean outlaying more money to start with, but it is better than heartache later on.

Collies come in Three recognised colours Sable (the Lassie colour), Tricolour (black, tan and white) and Blue Merle (a silvery blue, patched with black in a marble like effect). They are somewhere between a Large and Medium size with bitches measuring 20 - 22 inches and dogs 22-24 at the shoulder. They are a double coated breed, which insulates them from extremes of weather.

If you should choose a Collie as your lifetime companion, you would be looking to pay between $450-$650 however price is definately something that you will have to discuss with the breeder.

The Internet gives you access to many Collie sites, please remember some countries have different standards (particularly America) a good starting point may be the Collie Club of Victoria Inc., it has links to all known online Australian kennels.
