MALTESE

ozpets
Contrary to popular belief that the Maltese originated in Malta, evidence suggests that the Maltese originated in Asia as early back as 5000-2000 B.C. They made their way from Asia to Europe and the Middle East, and were used as a means of barter for supplies in the trade centre, the Isle of Malta. They were bred as purebred Maltese dogs from as early as the 1500's and are one of the few dog breeds to retain it's name from it's origin.

The Maltese is known for its glamorous long white silky coat. The coat takes considerable amount of care and grooming. The best coats are derived from good breeding, good diet and grooming. Pet Maltese are generally kept clipped for easy maintenance. They do not loose their coats like other breeds and being silky like human hair people are less likely to be allergic to the Maltese hair.

The Maltese should have a black nose, black paw pads, brown oval eyes with a black rim and have scissor bite. They are a very small compact dog with a free lively movement and are sized below 25.5 cm tall to the shoulders. Though they are small they have attributes of a much larger dog, with overwhelming loyalty, intelligence and affection.

They are a perfect family pet that gets along with children and other animals. However remember that they will usually be the smallest in the household and the most fragile, so if children want a pet to rough and tumble with a Maltese may not be a good choice of dog.

A Maltese can have a good lifespan many living to mid teens. They will be a loyal companion for life and require companionship in return being a very people dog. They make a great guard dog being alerted by any noise. They respond with open arms to visitors for more kisses and cuddles than they already have.

Being owned by the sweet tempered Maltese will only be a pleasure.
