MY FAMILY AND OTHER ANIMALS DVD

Famed Author and Naturalist Gerald Durrell's Best Loved Novel Comes to Life Award-winning actress Imelda Staunton stars in Simon Nye's warm and magical new adaptation of the renowned autobiography by Gerald Durrell. Escaping the dreary wet weather of 1930s England, the eccentric and bohemian Durrell family uproot and ship themselves to the sunnier climate of the Greek island of Corfu.

Here, this rag-tag family - innocent 10-year-old Gerald, acne-infested Margot, gun-loving Leslie and overbearing, intellectual Larry - experience the joys of living a life of freedom and adventure under the watchful eye of their sympathetic mother (Staunton). Beautiful cinematography and outstanding performances by the entire cast bring this wonderfully rich story to life, and reminds us all of a child's innocent joy at discovery.

With the help of larger-than-life taxi-driver Spiro, who has something of a soft spot for Mother, the family move to a succession of different fantastically coloured villas across Corfu. While Gerald explores the glorious landscape, the wildlife it has to offer and befriends the local population, Mother has other ideas: fearing her son is growing too wild, she is determined that he receives an education. Gerald's moral as well as more conventional education is put in the hands of three very different young men, two of whom are more distracted by Margot's flirtatiousness than by Gerald's zoological enthusiasm.

First of all there's George who loses out to Margot's Turkish boyfriend; and then Peter a caddish young man who is happy to leave Gerald writing by himself while he pursues Margot at any cost. Of more lasting emotional importance for Gerald though is Theodore Stephanides, a biologist and witty raconteur who is young Gerald's link not only to the marine and insect life that Corfu has to offer, but also its rich cultural beauty.

Spending so much of his time in the garden and fields watching one sort of the animal kingdom in their natural habitat allows Gerald to learn more incisively about the habits of an altogether different group: his family.

This release also includes the very special BBC documentary 'Durrell's Ark', which includes passionate interviews with the renowned conservationist himself. Tracing Gerald's childhood on Corfu, his life's work and personal accounts of the animals he helped to save, 'Durrell's Ark' reveals the direct impact this single incredible man has had on biodiversity conservation, both in the field and by bringing the issues to the forefront of public attention, and in doing so influencing many hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
