BRITTANY

ozpets

Where ever the Brittany goes it attracts admiring glances with its striking coloured coat and its distinctive and perfectly balanced gait as it elegantly strides beside its owner.

Better known as a sporting dog than a family companion the Brittany is a French breed named for the area where it originated. The breed was developed from spaniels taken to France by British sportsmen and original French breeds.

The modern Britanny and was redeveloped in the early 1900s using crosses to various breeds. Formerly known as the Brittany Spaniel the name was changed to Brittany as the breed does the work of a pointing retriever, rather than a spaniel. It has also, in France, been known as the naturally Short-Tailed Brittany Spaniel as natural bob-tailed puppies
do occur in the breed.

Today, as well as being one of the top most popular breeds in France, the Brittany has a loyal band of admirers throughout the world who recognise its ability as a working gundog, but also as a family companion. Its temperament is required to be adaptable to any environment, sociable, intelligent and mentally balanced and easily trained.

A versatile pointing dog with a passion for hunting, the Brittany is agile, vigorous and energetic and quick in movement but should not be hyper-active. Many Brittany will live happily in a suburban situation, however the Brittany is a high energy dog who is bred to work. It needs lots of exercise or opportunities to work to keep it happy and is a great joggers dog! Being left home alone for hours, or not given sufficient exercise may lead a Brittany to develop destructive behaviour. The Brittany is very trainable and dog sports, such as agility or flyball, help meet its desire to work.

Apart from exercise, the Brittany is a relatively easy care dog with a fine coat, lying flat on the body or with a slight hint of a wave. The coat is short on the head and the front of the limbs but the rear of the legs has feathering, One of the most striking features of the Brittany is the colour of the coat - white and orange, white and black, white and liver with more or less extensive irregular white patches. A narrow blaze on the head is desirable.

The Brittany is an excellent size for a family dog, with an ideal height of 49 to 50 cms making it small enough to fit in the average family car and accompany owners on family
outings.
