CLUMBER SPANIEL

ozpets

The Clumber Spaniel was evolved by the Duke of Newcastle at his Nottingham seat, Clumber, during the latter part of the 18th century and enjoyed considerable popularity among sportsmen who required a gundog to work in dense undergrowth at a more leisurely, methodical and slower pace than other spaniels.

A dignified, gentle, sweet natured dog the Clumber is a massive dog in size - long, low and heavily boned and although only approx. 51 cm in height it weighs up to 36kgs. The Clumber Spaniel is an active dog in spite of its size and requires regular walks and an owner who can manage a heavy-weight dog.

The very thoughtful expression is characteristic of the Clumber and it is a social, great hearted and highly intelligent dog with a determined attitude, sometimes wilful, but generally good with all age groups.

The Clumber Spaniel should give the appearance of great power yet be sedate in all movements and never clumsy. The gait of the Clumber has a characteristic rolling motion.

The most distinctive feature of the breed, apart from the massive build, is the lemon markings on the sparkling white dense and silky coat.
