Overview
The Cairn terrier is one of the oldest breeds of terriers. His birthplace is Scotland and he was kept by the "crofters" to eradicate vermin and to hunt the fox and badgers. He is double coated - he has a coarse weather resistant outer coat and a soft woolly undercoat. The Cairn terrier is best described as a "big dog" in a small package. He is gay, active and fearless.

The Cairn terrier makes an ideal pet for a suburban back yard. He is "self exercising" although he does love walks and to romp and play with family members.
Cairn terriers do not have a lot of genetic problems and for this reason live relatively long lives. They are an easy care breed - just keep them free of fleas and give a brush and a comb about once a week.
