The Unweaned Kitten Rescue Network (UKRN) was established in 1998 to fill a gap within the rescue community. There was no one specialising in the unweaned kittens (birth to 4 weeks).Vets, Shelters, Council pounds and the RSPCA contact us to foster surrendered kittens, so these kittens have a chance at a good life. Our committed group of volunteer foster carers take the kittens into their homes and raise them until they are ready to be re-homed. Where possible we get the people surrendering the kittens to vet check them prior to surrendering them. The UKRN receives no external funding. The only money the Network receives is from fund raising stalls in shopping centres and donations from the public. Over the years the Network has built an on-going relationship with some Veterinary clinics across Brisbane. They offer our carers discount consultations, vaccinations and desexings. Carers are also able to obtain necessary items (such as Kitten Milk Replacer, kitten & cat food and many other things) from wholesalers, which lowers the cost. The Network assists with re-homing the kittens with a listing on various rescue websites and a weekly ad in the Courier Mail Weekend Shopper. After the kitten has been desexed and is ready to be adopted, the details of the kitten can be given to the adoption coordinator so they can be included on the adoption list. A hand raised kitten makes an excellent addition to a family, as they are usually very people friendly and settle well into new families. When the network receives an enquiry from someone wanting to adopt a kitten, we refer them on our carers. The carer is the one to decide if the new family is a good match for the kitten. You always have the final say as to who adopts your baby.As all the costs associated with raising the kittens is met by the carer, the entire adoption fee stays with the carer to offset most of the costs incurred raising the kittens. The UKRN is always looking for dedicated, caring people to help us save more of these precious lives. No previous experience is required, as free and comprehensive training is provided. The training is no charge and is obligation free.Training sessions take between 2 and 4 hours and when possible we will have hands-on training with young kittens. The method we use has been tried and tested over 11 years and our success rate is very high. Our carers have amassed a great deal of knowledge and during the training sessions, we endeavour to teach you everything you need to know to successfully raise the kittens. All this information can be overwhelming, but not to worry, reference material is provided so you don't have to remember it all. After your training, support is always just a phone call away. .If you think this is for you, please contact us to arrange a training session. |
